As the festival of lights, Diwali approaches, sweets become an essential part of the celebration. They symbolize joy, prosperity, and the sweetness of life. However, amidst all the indulgence, it’s important to make mindful choices, especially when it comes to mawa (khoya) sweets. While mawa is a popular ingredient, the high demand during festive seasons often leads to adulteration, which can affect both the quality of the sweets and your health. In this post, we'll explore why it’s wise to avoid mawa sweets during Diwali and list some delicious mawa-free alternatives to satisfy your festive cravings. I personally do not buy any mawa sweets during any festive season.
Why Avoid Mawa Sweets During Festivals?
Mawa, a dairy product made by reducing milk, is a common ingredient in many Indian sweets like gulab jamun, barfi, and peda. But with the surge in demand during festivals like Diwali, unscrupulous vendors often resort to adulterating mawa with substances like starch, synthetic milk, or even detergents to meet the supply.
Health Risks of Adulterated Mawa:
Digestive Issues: Adulterated mawa can cause stomach upset, food poisoning, or more severe digestive issues.
Toxic Chemicals: Synthetic milk, often used in adulteration, contains harmful chemicals that can lead to kidney and liver damage.
Decreased Nutritional Value: The added fillers dilute the nutritional quality of the sweets, leaving you with empty calories and potential health hazards.
With so many concerns, it's best to opt for mawa-free sweets that are equally delicious and much safer to enjoy during the festive season.
